​Chapter 5 - Calypso



Summary: (Breana)



All of the gods except Poseidon get together on Mount Olympus to talk about what they should do about Odysseus. Athene speeks on how she think they should help support Odysseus. The messenager of gods, Hermes is sent to Calypso’s island to tell her that Odysseus is allowed to leave so he can return home. She complains that they are allowed to take human lovers while the affairs of the female gods must always be frustrated. In the end, Calypso then helps him build a new boat and watches filled with sadness as Odysseus sails away.

Some major themes found in chapter 5 were:
Pg. 66 Homeric Simile and Justice- Wanting to keep Odysseus but also letting him go.
Hospitality: Calypso welcomes Hermes into her home and feeds him lots of food while Hermes gives her the message from Zeus

Pg. 68 Loyalty: Odysseus wanting to go home and see his wife instead of choosing immortality and eternal youth.

The Daughter of Cadamus gives Odysseus a veil to tie around his waste so that Odysseus can swim to the shore without drowning.

Athene disguises herself as the princess of the land's friend, and convinces the princess to go down to the river where Odysseus has landed and wash her clothes.

When Odysseus gets to the shore, he throws off the veil into the water and builds a shelter for him to rest in
